WHEN CAN I TAKE MY SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT?

Your Full Retirement Age (FRA) determines when you qualify for your full benefit.

  • If you were born between 1943 and 1954, FRA is 66.

  • For those born in 1955 and beyond, FRA gradually increases up to 67.

HOW MUCH WILL I RECEIVE?

Your benefit amount, known as the Personal Income Amount (PIA), is based on your 35 highest-earning working years, adjusted for inflation. You can claim Social Security as early as 62, but your monthly benefits will be permanently reduced. Waiting past your FRA earns you an 8% increase per year, up to age 70.

HOW DOES WORKING EFFECT MY SOICAL SECURITY?

At full retirement age, you can work without impacting your benefits. If you're below full retirement age, benefits will be reduced by $1 for every $2 earned over $18,960 (in 2021). In the year of retirement, $1 is withheld for every $3 earned over $50,520 (in 2021).

WHAT IS A SPOUSAL BENEFIT?

Spouses can claim benefits based on their partner's work record, even if they never held paid jobs. The working spouse must already receive retirement or disability benefits, and the nonworking spouse must be at least 62. Waiting until full retirement age yields up to 50% of the working spouse's benefit.

WHAT WILL MY SPOUSE RECEIVE WHEN I DIE?

Widowed spouses become eligible for 100% of their partner's full benefit, with reduced benefits available from age 60.

ARE THERE SPOUSAL AND SURVIVAL BENEFITS FOR DIVORCED SPOUSES? 

Divorced spouses may be eligible for benefits based on their ex-spouse's work record if the marriage lasted at least ten years. They must be unmarried to qualify.

WILL I OWE TAXES ON SOCIAL SECURITY?

Possibly. While Social Security isn't part of gross income, a portion might be taxable. The IRS uses "Provisional Income" to determine taxable amounts.
